Student Inventors Travel to San Jose

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, of Troy, N.Y., is sending two teams, as is the University of Maryland, who will joins with teams of students from other universities across the country competing in the eighth annual National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance's "March Madness for the Mind" on Saturday, March 20, hosted by the Tech Museum of Innovation in downtown San José.

One RPI team received funding from the Lemelson Foundation to commercialize a fire extinguisher training system. The group founded a start-up company called Bullex Digital Safety Equipment in Rensselaer's incubator center. A patent is pending on their invention, which simulates the experience of using an extinguisher and incorporates an electronically controlled flame.

The other team will compete with a wireless tethering system that helps prevent firefighters from getting separated from each other during a fire. Working prototypes of the product, called TekAlert, will be displayed at the event. The team also has a patent pending on the invention.

Other competitors include:
Two University of Maryland teams will be showcasing their innovations. The Alertus Technologies E-Team has created a wireless emergency warning system and the Cyprus Precision Team is incorporating new technologies to produce a device to measure and analyze athletic performance.

University of Southern California's FAST TCP project is working on a program to improve the speed and lower the cost of transferring large amounts of data over long distances via the internet.

Stevens Institute of Technology's team has developed an alternative form of sutures to be used for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The EchoTech Marine Team from Lehigh University has created the Easy-Ionizer, a tool for maintaining calcium and alkalinity levels in aquariums.

The event is open to all museum visitors.
